A continuously morphing list of useful links, this will be updated to the best of our abilities, help would be appreciated, if you stumble across a dead link or if you want to exchange links, please contact us through the contact page. Many multi-translation engines exist, big players like Systran, SDL international and now Google provide translation tools for multiple languages. These tools cover the languages you'd expect from generic tools, meaning the big monolithic languages are present, spanish, french, japanese, chinese etc. but for instance Urdu or Hindi require a specific translator. Probably related to internet penetration moreso then number of speakers.
A special note is reserved for websters online dictionary, this is basically a catch all translator, try to enter any foreign term and chances are it gives the english translation no matter how exotic, if a term is not found they will try to find a translation, this means, the more you use it the better it gets. The same goes for google's translator which provides a way to suggest translations. Whichever multitranslation tool you use, keep in mind that most dedicated translators are more reliable.
Every language is a science in itself, the languages change over time and are highly dependent on local context. In general there are language groups to which each language belongs, this language groups can be divided by type, history and/or geography. Most important for domain investors or basically anyone who plans to go local is the relative insignificance of the literal translation compared to the actual connotation of the word. Always keep in mind that the english translations as you read them do not automatically contain the connotations that are carried with the word in english, in fact they seldomly do.
This list cannot be long enough so if you know any good resource that's not in the list, please use the contact page to share it.
For Japanese Jim Breen has collected (and created) dictionaries which combined form the most authoritative japanese machine translator. For Chinese we have MDBG as the authority, this cool site also has a handwriting tool and it has audio samples for all the characters, more importantly it allows the user to suggest translations. For Russian IDNtools advices multitran as the primary machine translator.      For Arabic IDNtools advices tarjem as the most authoritative machine translator. SE results are a potential value indicator since the amount of indexed pages is a direct representation of the amount of pages that are actually using a particular term. However, be warned, high SER numbers with low specific numbers for the amount of monthly searches are usually an indication of common words which are meaningless when used stand-alone. Vice versa, low SER numbers with high specific numbers for the amount of monthly searches are usually an indication for a "hype"-term, maybe a Celebrity name, a Manga character, etc.
If possible check the images attached to the SE results, obviously consistent use of a particular image is favorable, terms that give highly inconsistent images are usually non-stand alone words.
This is basically the most important SE used for domain value indications, most important because it is most used in domaining, meaning that there's an abundance of precendence in using google SE results. Also, it is by far the fastest SE. The market share on january 2008 was about 80% globally. The second most important SE, the market share was about 15% on january 2008. Noticably slower than Google. Belonging to the top-10 of most used search engines in the world this is the most important SE for Russian terms. Rambler is a good second The first arabic search engine launched worldwide, allowing arabic script to be crawled efficiently. It is adviced to stick with Araby for arabic and farsi terms. The nr.1 SE in China, having a market share of about 60% in january 2008.      The crux of your regging efficiency lies in the quality of your tools, recoqnizing keywords and potential marketing terms is something you can do mostly by intuition for the languages you master, beyond that forget about 'smelling' quality terms, you need hard data. Google traffic estimator perhaps delivers a more ambiguous output but given a fixed assumed CTR it can be used as a speedy tool to determine keyword popularity. Specifically for chinese I advice the baidu popularity tool, you get daily(!) search amounts with averages over weeks, months and 3-monthly periods. Unfortunately overture has buried their bidtool but baidu has one live and kicking for the chinese market. For Russian we have the worstat tool from Yandex, this very fast tool also gives monthly history data, downside is that plural and singular is not always discriminated Currently keyworddiscovery can be used for the following languages : German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish
This may possibly be expanded with Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Unicode is unfortunately not the well supported, common encoding it should be. If you want to employ it on your website (thoroughly) be sure to read 10 tips , 10 tips(2) and the basics. The primary income source for domain owners is off course the PPC through ads. The basic options for providing an ad platform are :
Parking provider, quick and easy, however don't underestimate keyword optimization
Unique Mini sites, use a CMS like drupal or hire a developer
Content generation, see for instance YACG
Full blown website..., hard work and a lot of uncertainty but if it pays..oh it pays..
Besides hiring programmers through for instance Elance you can also resort to more dedicated minisite developers, they will have more routine and specific tools, limiting build time and price.
If you are a developer, contact me through the contact page if you want to get listed. state your languages, your skills and a link to your website.
Selling a name is preferably done directly in the aftermarket forums, you simply have more control over what happens, you can communicate with the interestees and you build up credibility, the benefit of using auction sites like sedo or afternic is the escrow service they provide and the larger exposure to endusers. This is not a very exhaustive list as you can see but these are give-or-take the registrars of choice for IDN's and it is generally adviced to limit yourself to as few registrars as possible. Most registrars allow you to load the account with credit, this makes registering a domain a lot faster, especially if you can use an API (dynadot has this option for bulkregistrants). Currently Snapnames is the most successful dropcatcher for IDN's, the quality of the drops is quite low for the most part but there are definitely opportunities here if you want to build a portfolio. In case you finish a sale through a forum or through regular email you want to be sure that you are protected legally. To guarantee this use escrow services, the domain is pushed to the buyer and the money is sent to the seller as soon as both the money and the domain is in hands of the escrow service. Always use trusted escrow sites, escrow.com or moniker.com are solid escrow services, idnbond may be preferable for smaller IDN sales. Some reward for your hard development work is in order right ? But how ? Well, you have the paypal donation buttons for instance or the more lean tip buttons. Place them on your site so that people can give the credit you deserve. Most important when developing sites is SE friendliness, to this end I have listed some useful tools.
